Food Manager Certification FAQs

Learn about the process of obtaining your food certification, state requirements, training options and the importance of keeping your credentials current.

Who needs Food Manager Certification in Texas?

At least one employee who supervises workers, manages daily operations and maintains safety and compliance at a Texas food establishment must obtain a Food Manager license.

Is the exam state-approved?

Yes, our Food Manager Certification Exam is approved by the Texas DSHS. Once you pass the exam, you can work as a CFM anywhere in the state.

What is the difference between a Food Manager Certificate and a Food Handler Permit?

The Food Manager Certificate is designed for employees in supervisory roles who direct and control food preparation. Food Handler cards are issued to workers who prepare, package, serve, store or distribute consumable goods and anyone who comes into contact with utensils, table linens or food processing equipment.

Can I take the Food Manager Exam online?

Yes. Both our exam and training course with exam bundle are entirely web-based. You can take them anywhere you like, using any internet-enabled device.

How many attempts do I get to pass the exam?

You will have unlimited test attempts to obtain a passing score of 70% or higher at no extra cost.

How long is the Food Manager Certification valid?

Your Texas Food Manager Certificate is valid for five years. You must renew it before it expires.

How will I receive my certificate?

You can download and print your certificate as soon as you pass the exam.

What happens if I lose my certificate?

If you misplace your certificate, simply log back into your account to download a new copy. You can download as many copies as you like at no additional charge.

How do I renew my certification?

To renew your certificate, you must retake and pass the official exam before your current certificate expires. This renewal process is required every five years if you wish to continue working as an authorized Food Manager in Texas.

Do I need to take the training course before signing up for the exam?

The training program is voluntary but strongly recommended. The course explores key exam topics to help you prepare.

How long is the training program?

The course is approximately eight hours long, but you can stop and resume the modules as often as needed.

What are the differences between an ANAB-accredited certification and a DSHS-approved certification?

ANSI/ANAB-accredited programs provide national certification, while Texas DSHS-approved programs offer statewide certification. Obtaining a DSHS-approved certification may be a better option if you plan to work solely in Texas.

Here’s why:

  • ANAB certification exams often allow only one or two test attempts. You will need to repurchase the exam if you don’t achieve a passing score after the allotted attempts. The DSHS certification exam provides unlimited attempts.
  • Our food safety education and DSHS-approved exam cover both federal and Texas-specific laws. ANAB programs do not cover state regulations.

Can an establishment owner act as the on-duty CFM?

Yes. Anyone who passes the Food Manager exam can serve as the designated CFM.

What happens if a food establishment doesn’t have a CFM on duty?

Texas law requires every food service establishment to have at least one CFM on duty during operating hours. If one isn’t present, the business may face penalties or even be subject to closure.

Do you offer group discounts?

Yes. We offer discounts for bulk order training purchases.

What support is available if I have technical or content-related questions?
